Choosing a hotel is worth doing properly, even for one night: a nice hotel can be a great chance to relax and enjoy yourself even on business, a poor one can leave you tired form poor sleep and in no mood to either work, travel or have a holiday or break.

Choosing a hotel does depend a lot on what you are doing and what you need, otherwise it can be supposed all hotels would offer the same thing. Leisure or business is one main factor but some things are key to any hotel you choose. Food may well be a big part of what a hotel offers, alongside a comfy bed; even if it is just breakfast you will want something substantial, probably with good choice and maybe something a bit special: there have to be some perks to being on a business trip. Make sure you really know what you are getting for breakfast and beware breakfast buffet could mean a choice of three breakfast cereals that you have to pour yourself. Evening meals may be important to you as well, on business especially you may just want a quick meal before going to relax and sleep in your room; you want something good still though with a good level of service. You may want to check out their chef's credentials and any reviews: either by professional restaurant critics or customers; a restaurant open to the public is usually a good sign as well. Room service of course may be what you want if you really want to just relax so check that a hotel offers it before booking.

Other things you may want to check out on a hotels websites before booking are facilities such as a gym, pool or full health club that may be a nice extra. Location as well is important, not just general location but exact location so check on Google Maps, the hotel may well have a different idea of '5 minutes from the station' or 'overlooking the park' than you do.

There are of course lots of things that you will be more interested in depending on the reason you are staying in a hotel: if it is business then high speed wireless internet is important perhaps, or maybe just that it is a quiet hotel without any loud entertainment going on or too many children. A room with a decent desk and comfortable chair to work at may also be a major consideration.

If you are on holiday for a family holiday you may want entertainment for you and for the children and if you are somewhere nice and hot an outdoor pool and plenty of sun-loungers: a location with lots of attractions nearby is also worth considering. If you are on a short break or a holiday as a couple then you may want a hotel with lots of similar couples you can socialize with or maybe just a location somewhere interesting and a room that is clean and practical and has a comfy bed but little else.
